Our first week of sailing has been a blend of excitement and learning. New campers are diving into introductory lessons, while returning campers are refreshing their skills with safety briefings. Paired into groups and guided by a sail counselor, the new campers are being introduced to the basic sailing principles and the safety aspects of the boats. Returning campers, who previously earned their skippers, have been sailing with a counselor to refresh their knowledge. Once they demonstrate their ability to sail safely, they will be allowed to sail on their own under the supervision of the safety boat. Next week, we’ll focus on capsize drills and self-rescue techniques, ensuring every camper is prepared for any situation on the water.

For evening activity we continued our cherished tradition of announcing camp sisters at the flagpole. Our head staff lowered the flag, and then “We Are Family” played, and our campers formed a big circle to discover who their “sisters” would be for the summer of 2024. After dinner, the girls gave each other tours of their bunks and returned to the dining room for milk and cookies, capping off a wonderful day of bonding and fun. For our new families, camp sisters is one of the best traditions at RLGC. Each camper is assigned one early on in the summer and is able to count on their camp sister for anything they may need at any time. We have camp sister lunches and dinners, they write each other letters, bring each other gifts from their trips, and do other thoughtful sisterly things!
